Message from the Superintendent

Under the vision of "TMU One Campus" at Taipei Medical University (TMU), the Taipei Neuroscience Institute (TNI) integrates talents from Taipei Medical University Hospital(TMUH), Wan Fang Hospital(WFH), Shuang Ho Hospital(SHH), and the TMU system, combining clinical and basic research fields to advance neuroscience development in the areas of healthcare, education, research, and talent cultivation. The aspiration is for the TNI family to achieve harmony, sharing, and mutual benefit (“Everyone is Included and Supported”).

Established in 2017, TNI, with Superintendent Yong-Kwang Tu as its founding Superintendent, amalgamates a total of 123 physicians from the three affiliated hospitals. About 40% are from Shuang Ho Hospital, while Wan Fang Hospital and Taipei Medical University Hospital each contribute approximately 30%. This integration not only achieves the goal of physician integration from the three hospitals but also harnesses various talents and resources to bolster the development of clinical neurology. In December 2023, Yung-Hsiao Chiang assumed the role of the second Superintendent, leading Administrative Vice Superintendent Chien-Min Lin, Educational Vice Superintendent Tu-Hsueh Yeh, Research Vice Superintendent Jiann-Her Lin, Director Li Wei of Medical Department, Deputy Director Wei-Lun Lo of Medical Department, and Director Wei-Wen Su of Administration Department, continuing to integrate physicians from the three affiliated hospitals and professors from the Research Center for Neuroscience (NRC).

Comprising 15 team leader members, TNI includes teams led by Director Wen-Yuh Chung of Radiosurgery Department, Director Yu-Kai Su of Neuro-Oncology Department, Director Yi-Chun Kuan of Neurodegenerative Disease Department, Director Lung Chan of Cerebrovascular Disease Dapertment, Director Chien-Hung Lai of Neuro-Rehabilitation Department, Director Chia-Shiang Lin of Pain Disorder Department, Director Tai-Tong Wong of Pediatric Neurology and Neurosurgery Department, Director Wan-Lin Chen of Neurotrauma and Critical Care Department, Director Heng-Wei Liu of Spinal Disorders Department, Director Hou-Chang Chiu of Neuro-Immunology and Peripheral Neuropathy Department, Director Min-Lan Tsai of Epilepsy Department, Director Chih-Chung Chen of Vertigo Department, Director Yen-Hui Liao of Headache Department, Director Yueh-Hsun Lu of Neuroradiology Department, and Director Hsin-Chien Lee of Sleep Medicine Department.

Taipei Medical University also established the Taipei Medical University Research Center for Neuroscience (NRC) in 2018, with Professor Yung-Hsiao Chiang as the first director and Professor Jian-Ying Chuang as the second director in 2024. Currently, it is led by 11 team leaders, including Leader Professor Cheng-Yu Chen of NeuroImage Team, Leader Professor Chaur-Jong Hu of Vascular Dementia Team, Leader Professor Yu-Wen Cheng of Retinopathy Team, Leader Professor Yung-Hsiao Chiang of Trauma Brain Injury Team, Leader Professor Hsin-Chien Lee of Sleep Medicine Team, Leader Professor Chien-Hung Lai of Neural Rehabilitation Team, Leader Professor Jiann-Her Lin of Sng Pain Team, Leader Professor Jia-Ying Sung of Peripheral Neuropathy Team, Leader Professor Yi-Hua Chen of Child Development Team, Leader Professor Thierry Burnouf of Platelet Neurotrophins for Neurorestorative Biotherapy Team, and Leader Professor Niall Duncan of Brain and Consciousness Team.

NRC consists of 107 faculty and physicians from TMU , with approximately 80% below the age of 60 and about 70% holding professor or associate professor positions. It actively encourages young scholars to engage in research to sustain education and foster talent.

From 2017 to the present, TNI averages 132 papers per year with an Impact Factor of 4.422 and executes an average of 31 projects funded by the National Science and Technology Council annually. Moreover, it performs an average of 256 brain tumor surgeries, 123 cerebrovascular disease surgeries, and 2,438 spinal surgeries per year. From 2018 to the present, NRC averages 311 papers per year with an Impact Factor of 4.6 and executes an average of 82 projects funded by the National Science and Technology Council annually, demonstrating outstanding performance.

NI and NRC currently integrate nine major specialized neurological medical teams, including Stroke Team, Spine Team, Neurodegenerative Disease Team, Pain Disorder Team, Sleep Team, Vertigo Team, Neuro-Immunology and Peripheral Neuropathy Team, Pediatric Neurology and Neurosurgery Team, and Neurotrauma Team, aspiring to lead Taiwan's neurological medicine. Each team sets integration and development goals and strategies according to different professional fields and plans regular meeting times. Additionally, to leverage the advantages of the HIS 3.0 system, TNI establishes consensus standards for ICD Coding in clinical practice at each affiliated hospital. In the future, it aims to advance towards the goal of Neurorestoration through the development of Neuromodulation and Brain-Computer Interface (BCI)

TNI is committed to integrating the strengths of teams from the three affiliated hospitals, promoting collaborative development and continuous improvement among the three hospitals, unifying the service and research capabilities of each affiliated hospital's neurological team, advancing together, benefiting patients, and achieving the vision of harmony, sharing, and mutual benefit(“Everyone is Included and Supported”)!
